– event set for next weekend
In an effort to fill an obvious gap between juniors and seniors in terms competitions, the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) has planned what should be a massive Under-23 Games that has attracted major corporate support.
Following Chavez Ageday’s performance at the South American Under-23 Games earlier this year in Columbia where he made both 100m and 200m finals the AAG thought it was best to create a niche for athletes Under 23 years old.
Speaking briefly with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, AAG President Colin Boyce said that the association is currently awaiting confirmation of sponsorship from beverage company Banks DIH while support from Digicel was ascertained.
“Clubs will be competing for cash prizes and trophies. We also have a fund raiser on the same day,” Boyce informed, adding that it is expected that the event would become an annual feature on the AAG calendar of events.
He said that because the association was unable to hold trials for the South American U-23 Games in Columbia, the idea came up that they should still go ahead and hold a meet that caters for such athletes in view of future selections.
“After we did not get to select athletes from a trial for the U-23 Games, we felt that we should hold this meet, which will coincide with a fund-raiser to identify athletes for those future competitions,” the AAG President indicated.
The meet was in the pipelines for quite some time and it should attract the cream of the crop of Guyana’s junior (Under-20) and amateur seniors (Under-23) athletes in one big fusion that should be nothing short of amazing. (Edison Jefford)
