Irate South Ruimveldt residents battered a suspected robber to death at around 23:00 hrs last night shortly after he and two others had attacked and robbed a computer engineer from the community.
The suspect, identified as Simeon Lawrence, called ‘Bo Bo’ of Rasville, was cornered in an alleyway in the vicinity of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, where vigilante justice was meted out to him.
Kaieteur News understands the police found a .38 revolver, which had no bullets, on the slain man.
Police sources said that Lawrence is believed to be one of three men who had attacked and robbed computer engineer Mervin Lyght in the vicinity of the South Ruimveldt Shopping Plaza.
According to reports, Lyght was near his home when Lawrence and two accomplices held him at gunpoint. They then relieved him of $16,000 a computer that he had recently repaired.
However, Lyght raised an alarm and one of his brothers, along with other residents ran to his assistance.
Two of the robbers managed to escape with the money and computer but the residents pursued Lawrence to Roxanne Burnham Gardens. Sources said that Lawrence threatened them with the revolver, but when he failed to shoot, the residents realised that the weapon was empty and kept up the chase.
The desperate man attempted to flee through an alley but slipped. The group then pounced on him.
A desperate struggle reportedly ensued, during which Lawrence allegedly struck the men with the empty weapon and bit the robbery victim’s brother.
But as the residents began to rain blows on him, Lawrence began to plead for his life and even promised to identify the other robbers.
Nevertheless, the residents ignored his pleas and beat the youth until he succumbed. Police eventually arrived and took the suspect’s mud-smeared body to the Georgetown Hospital.
A relative of the robbery victim and others were taken to the East Ruimveldt and were still being questioned at press time.
