Protest delays naming 3-Day winner
By Sean Devers
Only 18 overs were bowled yesterday as the final round GTM U-19 One-Day cricket match between Berbice and Demerara at the Police ground was condemned to a no-result due to rain.
Each team received a point with Berbice finishing on five points. Essequibo, whose four points were three more than last-placed Demerara who ended on 1 point, took the runner-up spot after they beat Demerara in their own backyard in Anna Regina.
Man-of-the-Series in both GTM Three-Day and One-Day U-19 tournaments Harrinarine Chattergoon is bowled by left-arm spinner Raj Nanan for a top score of 39 yesterday. Demerara Skipper Dexter Solomon is elated.
Berbice, who got past Essequibo in Berbice, elected to bat first in gloomy conditions when the match finally began 2 hours late due to overnight and morning showers and Skipper Harrinarine Chattergoon and Raffel Estriado provided a solid 46-run foundation for their team on a slow track and heavy outfield.
Chattergoon, a former National under-15 Captain and brother of former West Indies youth batsmen Hemnarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon, dominated the opening partnership and was especially severe on National under-19 pacer Seon Daniels.
The right-handed Chattergoon, who finished with the most runs in the One-Day competition, flicked Daniels over square-leg for six, drove him of extra cover for a double and then disdainfully thumped him over mid-wicket for another six as the Malteenoes fast-bowler paid the price for bowling too full and into Chattergoon’s pads.
Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan, surprisingly left out of the team in Demerara’s defeat to Essequibo, made the break-through when he bowled Chattergoon for 39 as he attempted to cut.
Chattergoon, who took the Man-of-the-Series awards for both Three-day and One-Day competitions, struck 3 fours and two sixes in his 35-ball innings.
Estriado (20) was soon removed by former West Indies leg-spinner Amir Khan at 64-2 before Khan, who captured 17 wickets in the Three-Day version and six in the One-Day to finish as the leading wicket taker in both competitions, had Jomal La Fleur (2) brilliantly caught and bowled to leave the visitors on 70-3.
The stylish Dominic Rikhi, who was given a life on one at 52-1 when Nanan failed to hold a stinging return catch, and Sherwin McPherson were the unbeaten batsmen as rain ended the contest at 71-3 at 12:39hrs.
Khan finished with 2-11 and received two bats for his efforts with the ball in both competitions while Rikhi (147) was adjudged the best batsman in the three-day format while Essequibo’s Ricardo Adams who scored 91 against Berbice at Blairmont, was adjudged the best batsman in the One-Day tournament.
All of the awardees were presented with bats by GTM’s Marketing Representative Aneeta Shivprashad.
GCB President Chetram Singh congratulated the winners and explained that because Essequibo had appealed the decision to re-play their final round three-day game against Berbice, the Three-Day trophy would not be presented to winners Demerara yesterday.
The controversial ending to the contest in Region 2 due to bad light and the home team’s inability to bowl more than 7 overs in the last hour had led to a protest by Berbcie and offending official, Essequibian Umpire Zabeer Zakier being removed from yesterday’s One-Day game.
Singh said that a 26-man squad will soon be released by the selectors to participate in a few trial matches once the weather permits before the team to represent Guyana in this year’s Regional under-19 tournament in St Lucia is selected.
