Guyanese boxing promoter Seon Bristol is headed to the ‘big times’. He will stage a boxing card on May 7 at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino which will have Guyanese ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton battling Hector Camacho Jnr in a 10-round middleweight bout for the WBF Inter Continental title as one of the main events.
According to Bristol, who spoke to Kaieteur Sport via telephone from the US yesterday, following the cancellation of an event at the famed venue, he was offered the opportunity to step up and promote a card there. He grasped with open arms and has been putting all systems in place.
The card will also feature the ‘Stealth Bomber’ Gwendolyn O’Neil taking on American Krystal Davis in an 8 round contest for the WIBA heavyweight crown. Guyanese Raul Frank faces Dave Saunders of the US over 8 rounds in the middleweight division. The winner of the Frank bout could battle the winner of the Dalton, Camacho contest.
Bristol informed that apart from the main attractions arrangements are in place for appearances form Lennox Allen, Ronson Frank, younger brother of Raul, Steven Frank and Elton Dharry.
Kaieteur Sport questioned Bristol on his thoughts as he looks ahead. He stated that this was a great opportunity for him and Guyanese boxing as a whole and it has left a pleasing feeling. He highlighted the ability of Guyanese in the fight business stating that, “…we are a knowledgeable, gifted people…” that just need the opportunity to show our worth. Bristol informed that he was looking forward to the opportunity to stage professional boxing at the highest possible level, probably in Las Vegas. He noted that this was a stepping stone to higher and greater things.
Bristol disclosed when questioned, that it was difficult to stand alone to achieve the highest level, but rather he needed the support of all Guyanese especially the business community and fellow promoters and boxers to make this a reality. He noted the great opportunity for Guyana and its products to be advertised and sold overseas, calling the business community to lend full support. He sited that while it was nice to have Heineken and Coca Cola and other such products advertised, it would be much better to have products of Guyanese origins gaining the spotlight. This he is looking forward to in the not too distant future.
His only setback to date has been the short time in which to promote the event and is looking forward for all the assistance he can get from the media. Bristol is hopeful of making arrangements to have the card streamed online so Guyanese both home and abroad can follow the proceedings on May 7.
Meanwhile, Guyanese businesses in New York have been doing their bit to support their countryman. On April 29 a press briefing on the card will be hosted at Pop’s Lounge, while on Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1, Denny Dalton will be the featured guest at the Bamboo Garden Restaurant at L and 95 Street Brooklyn to promote the event.
