The History making Sunburst/GT&T/UDFA/JOF Haynes Twenty20 Football knock-out competition in the Bauxite Mining town of Linden will climax this evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground following 3-days of pulsating action.
Earning the right to battle for the top prize of $300,000 are Peacemakers of Ituni and Blueberry Hill United following contrasting semi-final victories on Thursday night before an animated and inclusive crowd.
Blueberry Hill were kept at bay by Amelia’s Ward United in a tough match-up with the dagger-like winning goal slipped into the back of the nets in the final minute of the game by striker Keith Gilkes following fellow strikers’ 16 year-old Denzil Ward’s missed attempt which spiraled off his boot into the path of Gilkes who accepted the opportunity to nail the winner with glee.
In the first semi-final, it was a true representation of end to end action likened to the Twenty20 format with Peacemakers based in Ituni and backed by a good supporting group, never backing off from the challenges posed by their rivals, Eagles United whose wings were eventually clipped as they lost 2-1.
Eagles it was, led by former National player ‘John’ Wayne Milo who flew into the lead in the high pressure encounter. Milo, netted the go ahead goal six minutes into the encounter to the delight of the teams’ supporters but that advantage was not allowed to stand for too long as the combination of the Adrian brothers conspired to spoil the smooth glides of the Eagles. First up, one minute after Eagles cantered into the lead, the speedy Norvel responded in like manner with the equalizer for Peacemakers who were in no mood for peace but all out war. The Ituni based side kept up the raids but Eagles too, engineered many counterattacks of their own which kept the spectators and supporters at the edges of their seats at the MSC.
With three minutes to the half way mark, Delon took over matters by sinking goal number two for Peacemakers, an effort which sent the crowd into frenzy.
Half time soon came but neither team eased off the accelerator with the game going down to the wire. When the final whistle sounded it was delight for Peacemakers and disappointment for Eagles who will now face Amelia’s Ward in the 3rd place game this evening, the winner pocketing $100,000. The losing finalist will receive $200,000.
Additionally, the top three teams will advance to the national competition which will feature the top teams from competitions that will be run in the other Associations affiliated to the Guyana Football Federation.
Action will kick off at 18:30hrs this evening with a game between the Mini Bus operators and Top Class which will be followed by the third place playoff between Eagles and Amelia’s Ward and then the championship game in this Historical tournament between Peacemakers and Blueberry Hill.
