New Amsterdam, Berbice- A senior teacher attached to the Vryman’s Erven Secondary School was pelted with a bottle on Monday by a male student from Grade Ten.
Luckily for the teacher, the bottle missed its intended target—the teacher’s shoulder—and hit one of the walls in the classroom leaving an impacted mark instead. There were broken fragments of the bottle splattered on the floor afterwards.
Kaieteur News understands that the male teacher spoke to the student earlier in the day during general assembly, after the student took offence to the teacher’s reprimand to enter the assembly auditorium.
The student threatened the teacher then proceeded to execute his threat just after 10:00 hours that morning.
This matter was then referred by the Department of Education to the police. A report was made by the teacher at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam. The parents of the child visited the school on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the matter is supposedly being investigated by the relevant authorities.
During last term, Kaieteur News understands that another teacher was being harassed by a Grade Eight student. The teacher had asked the student to put away his cellular phone (which was turned on) during the end of term examinations.
The teacher seized the phone and delivered it to the head teacher’s office. When he returned to the exam room, the student went into a rage and began hurling insults and cursing the teacher in front of another teacher and students writing the test.
The male then left the room and returned with two bottles in his hands and demanded his phone. The teacher then retreated immediately to the head teacher’s office, after it appeared that the student was going to pursue him to inflict injuries.
The matter was reported to the police, who subsequently arrived at the school. The child was suspended for a few days, and has since returned to school.
Vryman’s Erven Secondary School has, over the past years, become one of the hot-spots for highly indisciplined behaviour by students and intruders. Last year March, a young teacher was verbally abused and attempts were made to pelt him with a piece of wood aback of the school’s laboratory.
This time the attackers were strangers who frequently peruse the school grounds.
There is no permanent counselor stationed at the school. Some are now calling for the police to establish permanent presence at the educational institution. Others believe that the Ministry of Education can no longer deal with the severity and frequent occurrences of indisciplined behaviour at this school.
Sources agree that this school is a proverbial volcano waiting to erupt, and that when the authorities do act, it may be much too late.
