Dear Editor,
I just read Ryan Waldron’s letter in which he makes mention of Ricky Singh berating Minister Harold Lovell of Antigua about Antigua’s press freedom but by his silence seems oblivious to what’s going on in his native Guyana.
I support Mr. Waldron’s observation because within the last decade, Mr. Singh seems to have had an epiphany as it relates to Antigua.
I know Ricky’s memory is not failing him and as such, he must remember the numerous scandals, incidents of nepotisim, cronyism and downright theft of the people’s money that were the order of the day in Antigua under the Birds.
I know he knows this because his fallen friend and comrade Tim Hector was the one who exposed them time and time again in his newspapers with documentary evidence to boot.
At that time, Ricky joined the fray and never missed an opportunity to give support to his friend Tim.
He lambasted the Birds and the UPP with a vengeance. Then a strange thing happened.
Tim, in the twilight of his years, and maybe in a desperate bid to taste power which he thought would never happen if he continued to fight the Birds, turned turtle and aligned himself with the very people he fought for more than half of his life – to with, the Birds.
It was something with which the people of Antigua have never been able to come to grip. Tim Hector became a Birdite and so did all his friends and cronies around the world – Ricky Singh included. All the wrongs of the ALP were washed away in one fell swoop just because Tim Hector joined hands with his nemesis Lester Bird. One has to live the Antigua experience to understand it.
The ALP is a machine exxtraordinaire. Its tentacles extend to every corner of the globe and if there was ever a party versed in the art of winning friends and influencing people, it is the ALP. Don’t ask me how they do it but for all the wrongs the ALP visited upon the people of Antigua and Barbuda, it must be shocking that anyone on this planet would even wish to remember them, let alone speak up on their behalf.
These people belong in jail for crying out loud. But back to my friend Ricky…
Now I have to say that Ricky Singh was a journalist I greatly admired and would have defended with every fibre of my being against anyone who attacked him – and I have to admit that Ricky’s foes are many. But I had to stand up and think again because while Ricky does not miss an opportunity to vilify the UPP administration that currently rules Antigua, he is not only silent on the many transgressions of the PPP in Guyana, he lauds and praises them and defends their every misstep.
He sees no wrong with the governance of Mr. Jagdeo and company. But he does all this from the relative safety of Barbados his adopted home.
Why doesn’t he make the move back to his homeland? After all, if you listen to him, he only left because of the despot Burnham! Now that Guyana has become Utopia and the man who rules supreme can walk on water, he still stays away. Why?
There are some things in life that you never comprehend. Ricky and his views are two of them. The Bible speaks of his type.
