– five conservancies to be managed
The Ministry of Agriculture’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) will soon implement a water management board for controlling and managing water resources in Region Two, which is expected to provide support to the regional administration in terms of water resources management; this is according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture Monday.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, regulations are being drafted for the implementation of a water management board to manage and operate primarily the conservancies in Region Two, which will enhance the operation and maintenance of the conservancies as it is currently being done in other regions along the coast.
The statements further said that it is expected that the Board will provide directions and support for water resources management with regard to the five conservancies; Tapakuma, Iteribisi, Mainstay, Golden Fleece and Capoey conservancies, ensuring stakeholder representation and participation in managing water resources in the conservancies, supporting effective monitoring and conservation of water resources and facilitating desirable linkages with other stakeholders and other water users.
It was revealed that the Board will fall under the purview of the Drainage and Irrigation Act which mandates the NDIA to regulate drainage and irrigation of any area, in this case, Region Two.
The Board will implement a water resource management operations manual similar to those implemented in conservancies in Regions Three, Four and Five.
In addition all relevant stakeholders will play a part on the Board inclusive of Ministry of Agriculture officials, Water Users Association, Regional Administration and a representative from the Amerindian communities.
