– Linden wards to play Georgetown’s finest
By Edison Jefford
The Mackeson Super Ward Basketball Championship went according to the pundits’ scripts when Linden’s Christianburg and Central Mackenzie both advanced to the Final Four round of the competition with wins Tuesday night.
Christianburg set the early pace when they came from being down in the first two quarters to win 75-55 after East Coast’s offence collapsed in the second half. The win was Christianburg’s third consecutive in Group ‘A’.
Quincy Jones scored 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds and ‘dished’ four assists to lead Christianburg to the penultimate round of the competition where they are now tied with group leaders, North Ruimveldt for the top spot.
The two teams will play each other this weekend in a huge game to decide the team that will win the group and therefore has the right to play the second ranked team in Group ‘B’.
Jones got help from Nevin Grenville, who scored 16 points and Trevor Profitt, who had 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. ‘Big Man’ Nkossi Gurrick scored only five points but his 13 defensive rebounds was a major reason why Christianburg was able to rally from being down 12-9 in the first quarter and 33-29 at halftime to win the game. Gurrick is the leading candidate for the ‘Most Rebounds’ award with double figures in ‘boards’ in all three games he has played so far. East Coast’s Quacy Newton scored 12 points while Drumson McCulley had 11 points and 16 rebounds and Stephon Gillis 11 points.
The night certainly belonged to the teams from Linden as Christianburg set the tone for what would become another emphatic victory in the second game when Central Mackenzie outclassed South Ruimveldt 69-52.
Forward, Marvin Hartman found the form he had been searching for throughout the tournament with a 21-point performance that he completed with six defensive rebounds. Hartman and guard, Steve Neils Jr. shot the ball at a very high percentage.
Neils finished with 20 points and to exemplify his worth, he also took six rebounds, delivered five assists and made two steals. Forward, Omally Sampson scored 14 points and took 15 rebounds while national centre, Jason Alonso made his mark on the defensive end of the court with seven huge block shots.
For South Ruimveldt, Yannick Wade came up with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Enoch Mathews had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The tournament continues tonight with the penultimate games to decide the order of the two groups.
New Amsterdam will play Kitty/Campbellville in the first game and Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust is to contest South Ruimveldt in a good feature battle where both teams will be looking for their second win in the group.
