Yesterday, once again, one time death row prisoner, Odinga Greene, was committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of Nazalene Mohammed.
He was committed at the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
As the preliminary inquiry closed yesterday, Greene’s lawyer, Tanya Warren, presented to the Magistrate that in light of the evidence led against her client the court should find that a prima facie case has not been made out. Hence Greene should not be made to stand trial in the High Court.
However court prosecutor Stephen Telford presented to the Magistrate that the evidence produced during the preliminary inquiry was enough against Greene. Telford asked that the court use its knowledge and experience to find that the accused should be made to stand trial in a higher court.
The magistrate then ordered that Greene be remanded to prison and be made to stand trial in the High Court. His matter will be heard in the High Court during the next sitting of the Demerara assizes.
Greene is accused of killing 20-year-old Nazalene Mohamed some time between February 2, 2007 and February 12, 2007.
In the wake of that incident Suriname law enforcement officers turned Greene over to local police because he had sought refuge in the neighbouring state.
On February 13, 2007 the remains of a woman who was later identified as Mohamed was found in a burnt out coal pit in Linden.
Relatives identified the remains as that of 20 year-old Mohamed who had been missing for three weeks. Reports are that the East Ruimveldt resident left her home in the company of two friends – a man and a woman who were known to the family.
Based on information received the police had issued a wanted bulletin for Greene in relation to this killing. Greene was previously charged, convicted and later freed of the murder of Sandra Harvey of Wisroc, Linden.
