Host Essequibo defeated Demerara by 2 runs in the second round of the GTM/GCB U-19 Inter County 50 over cricket competition played yesterday at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Demerara won the toss and asked Essequibo to bat first in front of a fair sized crowd after the game was reduced to 48 overs due to seepage on the pitch caused by overnight rain.
The home team lost a few quick wickets to be 47-4, before Anthony Adams who top scored with 23 (1×6,1×4) and Seon venture 22 (4×4) added 40 runs for the 5th wicket. Herrel Green 20 (3×4) and Mark Tyrell 18 were the other principal scorers as Essequibo were bowled out for 150 in 45.3 overs. Former West Indies U-15 leg spinner Amir Khan bagged 4-25 off 10 overs while Shaquille Williams took 2-40, from 10, Delroy Charles 2-30 off 7.3 and Medha Dhanpaul 2-21 off 5 overs.
Demerara began their reply badly losing the wicket of Quincy Ovid Richardson (0) caught by Ricardo Adams at slip off Venture to be 1-9. Mark Tyrell then accounted for Kwame Crosse (3) as the visitors slipped into further trouble to be 19-2.
Dexter Solomon then led Demerara’s fight-back with a fighting 28 (1×4) while Alex Ramalho supported with 26 (2×4). Amir Khan 22 (2×4) and Andre Stoll 18 were the next best scorers as Demerara who lost wickets at regular intervals, were all out for 148 in 47.5 overs.
Anthony Adams a national U-19 player. was the pick of the home team’s bowling with 3-21 off 10 overs while Ricardo Adams, who hails from the same village where West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan was born in Wakenaam, picked up 2-24 off 85 overs. Herrel Green also took 2-25 while Venture, Tyrell and Ravendra Mohabir had one each for the winners.
Coach of the Essequibo team Vibert Johnson said he was pleased with his team’s performance. He also told Kaieteur Sport that his boys played to their full potential and showed the fighting spirit that is needed in Essequibo cricket. He further stated that it was good to end the competition on a high.
Demerara coach Gavin Nedd, a former national off spinner, stated that he was pleased with the performance of his bowlers but his batsmen did not apply themselves. He said that they are now looking forward to next game against Berbice which should be played on Friday at DCC.
