Canadian High Commission hosts ‘Movie Nights’

“Celebrating Canadian Values Through The Medium of Film” is the chosen theme behind the Canadian High Commission’s ‘Movie Nights’ set to run for three nights from April 26th through 28th. The event will be held at the Chapel of the Canadian High Commission at 18:00hrs each evening and is open to the public.
The features on each night are films that represent the true spirit of Canadian film making. The three chosen films are: Ce Qu’il Faut Pour Vivre – The Necessities of Life, Human Trafficking and Mon Oncle Antoine.
The Necessities of Life looks at a period in Canada’s history when the ravages of Tuberculosis forced many changes in the lives of Canadians including the Inuit, indigenous Indians of the Canadian Wild Lands. It takes a look at the dynamics of human relations and cultures in times of the epidemic. The film slated for the 27th is a modern thriller that looks at a very real and serious crime – Human Trafficking and so the movie is titled as well.  It features Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner Mira Sorvino as the lead as well as another well known actor Donald Sutherland as the plot runs through the lanes of this shady world and follows a group of young women, kidnapped and sold into sexual bondage.
The final night’s film is Mon Oncle Antoine, a 1971 French language Drama set in the late 1940s in a mining town which was soon to become the center of an industrial revolution. It is hailed to be one of the most acclaimed works in Canadian film history.
On the opening night guests will also be treated to a short documentary titled, “Suzuki Speaks” in which Dr. David Suzuki addresses the issues of deepest environmental concern, after which Canadian Environmental Consultant Mr. Craig Morrison will make brief remarks with regards to Earth Day 2010.
It should be noted however that there is only seating for 100 persons available and all visitors will be subject to a full security check.
