The 2009 New Building Society (NBS) 2nd Division 40-Over Cricket Competition organised by the Berbice Cricket Board continued recently with Whim Nationals defeating Johns in their Zone K (Lower Corentyne East) preliminary match to end unbeaten and thus winners of that zone.
Half-centuries from Tulsie Harricharran (83) and Devindranauth Thakoordeen (57) piloted Whim to 253 for 7 in their 40 Overs. When Johns relied, Mundasammy Veerasammy slammed 107 with 10 fours and 5 sixes. Left-arm spinner Deokarran Singh picked up 5-41, Johns lost by 61 runs as Whim National advanced to the last 16 play-offs.
Also going forward was No. 71 who defeated No. 70 M.Y.O to win Zone O (Upper Corentyne Central). In that match No. 70 M.Y.O. did well to score 240 in their allotted 30 Overs. When No. 71 replied Somdat Singh scored 58 and Deonarine Deodharry 55 to steer them to 204 for 5 in 24.4 Overs at which point the match was called off due to bad light, with No. 71 declared winners due to their superior run rate.
With Devendra Bachan hitting 58 and Kandasammy Surujnarine 54, Albion Community Centre were able to make 205 in 37 Overs against Albion Front Shockers who were then undermined by Guyana Under-15 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai who took 6 for 16 from 8 Overs to be bowled out for 107 despite a fighting 51 from Rajendra Dhanai.
Off-spinner Bheem Singh took 5 for 18 from 8 Overs to help No. 70 Lalman bowled out No. 64 Fighting Marines for 134 despite a fine 68 from Chris Looknauth. Opening batsman Rayon Yacoob then slammed 78 N.O to steer No.70 Lalman to an eight wicket win.
Fast bowler Churmani Ayana took 6 for 28 from 6.2 Overs for Yakusari Caribs when they bowled out Young Adventurers of No. 35 for 141. The Caribs went on to win by 4 wickets.
Charles Shepherd of Overwinning Bible Church was the other batsman to score a half century.
