Four years was the penalty given to man who attempted to throw “weed” over the prison fence.
The sentenced was imposed by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Rawle Doris pleaded guilty to the charge. He had in his possession 397 grams of cannabis. Police Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth told the court that on the day in question, Doris was standing on D’Urban Street when he threw a bag over the prison fence.
An alert prison officer saw Doris and he pursued and caught the man. The bag was retrieved and ranks discovered that it contained cannabis; Doris was cautioned and told of the offence.
When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say, Doris said that he received the bag from a man and he didn’t know what was inside of the bag.
And also yesterday, Magistrate Octive-Hamilton refused to grant bail to man accused of having an unlicensed firearm in his possession.
The man, Shane Morgan, pleaded not guilty to two gun-related charges when he appeared yesterday at court.
The allegation was that Morgan on April 16, had in his possession a .357 magnum revolver without being the holder of a firearm license. He pleaded not guilty.
It was further alleged that Morgan, on the same date, had in his possession 23 rounds of .357 ammunition and 20 rounds of .32 ammunition. Morgan also pleaded not guilty to that charge.
Morgan who was unrepresented declined to say anything on his behalf.
Police Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth objected to bail. Morgan is expected to make another court appearance on June 30.
