… Nismes fire
The proprietor of SR Service Station which is located at Nismes, West Bank Demerara, said that the fire service is yet to ascertain the cause of the fire which struck at the back of his gas station.
Jaikishan Naipaul told this newspaper yesterday that he was at another location when he got a call from his workers informing him that there was a fire at the premises.
He said that he immediately went down to the service station when he noticed a huge blaze aback of his building.
He said by that time the fire service was already on spot, as his employees, neighbours and others doing their bit with fire extinguishers and a bucket brigade. He further lauded the efforts of the Guyana Fire Service and his neighbours.
This newspaper was also told that persons in the area tried pushing one of the vehicles to safety but the blaze was too much. As a result, a canter truck, a car, a gas truck and a motor cycle were all destroyed. Still shocked at what transpired, Naipaul said he still cannot sum up his losses but thanks to proper safety measures the gas station itself was not destroyed.
He explained that the gas station has an automatic shut down system in the event of a fire and that system kicked in as soon at the fire started. However, some of the key lines which provide gas to the pumps have been damaged.
The gas station is expected to be up and running some time later today.
A senior fire official, who was back at the scene yesterday, said that the Guyana Fire Service is still conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The official told this newspaper that the ranks still need a few more statements from neighbours.
