A brilliant unbeaten 91 from national under-15 Skipper Ricardo Adams failed to prevent Essequibo from a 7-wicket defeat against defending champions Berbice at the Blairmont ground in the opening round of the GTM under-19 One-Day cricket competition yesterday.
The talented Adams faced just 60 balls and reached the boundary five times and cleared it on five more occasions before being left stranded 9 short of a maiden ton at this level as Essequibo fell for 197 in 48 overs.
Skipper Harrinarine Chattergoon and the in-form Dominic Rikhi then put together 72 for the second wicket to steer Berbice to 201-5 off 42 overs in their reply to give them an early lead in the three-team competition.
Essequibo won the toss and watched by a small crowd in glorious sunshine, elected to bat first on a slow straw-colored track which plenty of assistance for the spinners.
The visitors, whose delaying tactics in the three-day competition resulted in an official protest from the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), quickly lost Kevin Boode for 2 at 8-1 when he was bowled by the lively Raun Johnson.
National under-19 opener Herrell Greene who hit three fours in his 79-ball 26 then revived the position in a 50-run 2nd wicket partnership with Vejai Surajpaul who made 33 from 89 balls with a solitary boundary on the heavy outfield.
Lloydel Lewis then had Green, who again failed to build on a good start, caught at cover to leave Essequibo on 58-2.
The innings went into decline as Lewis and West Indies fast bowler Keon Joseph who bowled with good control and pace, made life difficult for the batsmen.
At 144-9, it seemed as if Essequibo would fall below 150 but Adams and last man Seon Venture (11) had other ideas and frustrated the Berbicians with an entertaining 10th wicket stand of 59 runs from 8.3 overs.
Clinton Pestano finally ended the innings when Venture was taken at square-leg to deny Adams what would have been a well deserved century.
Lewis took 3-17 and Joseph 3-28 for Berbice even as 20 Extras helped the Essequibo cause.
Chattergoon, the younger brother of former West Indies under-19 batsmen Hemnarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon, added 30 with the Trinidad-based Andrew Denis before Denis was removed by off-spinner Rovindra Mohabir.
Chattergoon and the elegant Rikhi then put their team in control with their half-century partnership before Chattergoon hit Mohabir to cover at 102-2.
Rikhi, a little right-hander with nimble feet against the spin and elegant drives against the faster men, was joined by national under-17 all-rounder Jomal LaFleur and the pair took the score to 175 before Rikhi edged Mohabir to the keeper.
LaFleur, who hit 35 from 54 balls with a solitary boundary, was then caught at mid-on at 190-4 before Mohabir struck again with victory seven runs away when he removed Sherwin McPherson who laboured for 20 balls for his single run.
Pestano (8*) ended the contest with a boundary as Mohabir finished with 4-37 from 8 impressive overs.
National pacer Rensford Beaton who bowled with pace, was expensive and finished with 0-54 from 7 overs in a losing cause for Essequibo who play their final match against Demerara tomorrow at Anna Regina.
Berbice and Demerara are scheduled to clash in the final round in Georgetown on Friday and it is understood that this game could be hit by another protest from Berbice since Umpire Zakeer, who officiated in the ill-fated three-day game in Region 2, has again been appointed to officiate in the final round clash.
