The battle for quarter-finals places is truly on tonight and tomorrow at the Georgetown Football Club ground when play in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football championship continue with respective double headers.
Today’s action opens at 6:00pm with the Guyana Defence Force coming up against BV Triumph, while in the nightcap at 8:00pm, defending champions Pele face Seawall FC.
The GDF are expected to come out blazing and will bank on the services of Stellon David, Royan Morrison, Trevon Lythcott and Sheik Kamal to lead their challenge.
Their opponents, BV/Triumph of the East Coast have indicated that they are coming to win and to claim that quarter-final spot. They will look to the services of veteran Shawn Daniels, Colin Jones, Romel Gordon and Devon Wilson.
Defending champs Pele are no stranger to the big game and are known to produce on the big stage and with five hundred thousands reasons just round the corner they are determined to leave the GFC tonight with their quarter-final place in the bag.
Travis Grant will head their line up which also features Solomon Austin, Mervin Joseph, Shawn Johnson and Calvin Shepherd.
Seawall FC are no push overs and a pitched battle is anticipated. They too plan to move into the quarters. Toine Lopes, Marvin Griffith, Captain Delon Josiah, Garlon Lewis, Cleveland Walcott and Michael Castello will carry the attack for the Seawall side.
Tomorrow the tournament continues with two more teams moving into the quarter-final round. That will be determined when Riddim Squad face Grove Hi Tech and Alpha tackle Golden Grove of the East Coast, who have come in for Victoria Kings.
The winners of the two day’s of matches will then hunt semi-final places. The final four are assured of prizes with the winner of the tournament collecting $500,000, while $200,000 goes to the runners up. The team finishing third receives $100,000 while the fourth placed side collects $50,000.
The tournament sponsors are Roshan Khan, DDL, Banks DIH, Digicel, Guyana Beverage Company Ltd, Giftland Office Max, Macorp, Courtney Benn and Nazar Mohammed of Mohammed’s Enterprise.
Two prizes for the Most Valuable Player were donated by Keishar’s and AH&L Kissoon Ltd, while Digicel will hand over a prize for the player scoring the most goals.
