Albouystown/Charlestown joined fellow frontrunners, North Ruimveldt as the only teams that are so far through to the Final Four of the Mackeson National Super Ward Basketball Championship after a comfortable win Sunday night.
Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph had a good all-round performance to place Albouystown among the money with a 70-59 points’ win against South Ruimveldt, which was their third in the tournament and which stretched their unbeaten record.
All four teams in the Final Four are set to receive prize monies with the winner taking home $500,000; second place $250,000; third place $150,000 and fourth place $75,000 in the lucrative National Super Ward Championships.
Joseph had 15 points but his front court game proved too superior for South’s defence as the diminutive point guard out of Linden, who guest appears for Albouystown, easily created, set-up and ‘dished’ countless passes to the forwards.
Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts was on the receiving end of Joseph’s assists for 12 points while Rodwell ‘Kobe’ Fortune had 11 points. Travis ‘Cook-Up’ Foster also got in offensively with 10 points, which he completed with seven rebounds.
Enoch Mathews scored 23 points; Gavin Beeram added 18 points and Fabian Johnson 12 points for South, which moved them to win and a loss in Group ‘B’. South must win all their remaining games to have a chance of reaching the Final Four.
Albouystown took command of the game in the first quarter with Alwyn Bellamy outside the three-point perimeter, Kanhai on the opposite end, Joseph up top, ‘Sugar’ and ‘Cook-Up’ at the bottom on a decent offensive combination.
Joseph delivered a few pin-point passes in the paint as South struggled defensively to go down 36-25 at half time. The highlight of the first half was a classic ‘no-look’ pass that Joseph mailed to Kanhai, which proved too ‘rich’ to finish.
The pass had enthusiasts at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on their feet as it would have easily been the best assist of the tournament so far. However, an intense defensive third period brought South Ruimveldt back into contention.
While Johnson and Mortimer Williams struggled offensively for South with lots of unfinished easy attempts, their defensive work in the paint and ‘crashing’ the board at the other end, got South back in the game with a 41-45 points deficit.
It was game on at that time, but the hopes of a real challenge soon dwindled as South got back into their early defensive lapse to help Albouystown easily maintain a five-point 50-45 lead at the end of the penultimate period.
Albouystown then went on an intense offensive run in the fourth quarter that completely obliterated South. Fortune, Joseph and Kanhai used their quickness to work on the tiring legs of South’s offence, which worked to perfection.
Kanhai completed the emphatic victory with a ‘no-look dish’ from the baseline under the net to Joseph at the top of the key for a huge three-point jumper.
The pass pierced every defender from South, whom simply did not see it coming.
Wortmanville secured its first win of the tournament when they defeated East Bank 91-80 in overtime after the scores were levelled 67-67 after regulation time. Wortmanville was also kept to 40-40 deadlock at halftime.
Travis Burnette turned up big with 23 points, Naylon Loncke scored 20 points, Devon Cameron 12 points and Clement Brusche had 10 points for Wortmanville as their offence finally gave them what they lacked in their two previous defeats.
East Bank also had four players in double figures with Quacy Roberts scoring 25 points, Trevor Smith 18 points, Mark Richards 12 points and Desmond Chin 10 points in the third loss for the East Bank side.
