Former Deputy BOG Governor Clarence Ellis dies in Washington DC

Former Deputy Central Bank Governor, Mr. Clarence F Ellis, passed away on Saturday evening in the United States of America.
Ellis attended Queens College in the 1940’s on a then much coveted Government County Scholarship from Essequibo where he obtained his School Certificate (O Levels).
An economist by training, Ellis’ professional life included stints for many years as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Guyana; Head of the State Planning Commission; Alternate Executive Director for the World Bank; Senior Advisor at the Inter-American Development Bank; and Lecturer at the University of Guyana.
He was also a fierce and fearless commentator on social and political life in Guyana, especially in recent years.
He was described as a true Guyanese patriot, a firm believer in the “natural rights” of humans of whatever race; ethnicity or tribe; religion; colour or gender, to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
More particularly, this was his wish for his native Guyana and Guyanese- a wish for which he was despairing in his last days, and for which he fought in his own way valiantly.
He will be sorely missed even as he “transits to the ancestors”, said a close acquaintance.
His friends and family said that they hope that his fortitude, vigor, intellectual dexterity and sincerity still continue to motivate Guyanese to work for a truly democratic Guyana. Also, relatives said persons must reflect a genuinely representative co-operative republic not beholden to drug lords, sycophantic tyrants or those who cherish the stroking of tribal divisions that consume Guyana.
