Day one of the 2010 Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) National Championships saw defending champion and National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud setting a scorching pace as he signaled intentions that any challengers must come very hard to dethrone him.
Enduring winds that were very tricky; moving and switching as never before with the humidity not helping, Persaud with an overall total of 134 points and 14 V-Bulls won the overall aggregate for the opening day, took the Valladares trophy for winning at 500 yards with a total of 50 points and 3 V’s with 2 possibles. Mahendra also won at the 900 yard range tallying 50 points and 7 V’s.
Old rival Ransford Goodluck who is 2nd overall, won the 300 yards contest with a perfect score of 35 points and 7 V-Bulls to end the day with 130 points and 11 V’s.
In the O Class category, Peter Persaud holds the pole position having ended with 126 points and 8 V’s, a slim lead ahead of Lt. Col. Terry Stuart who is one point and a V-Bull back.
Some of the competitors including veteran, Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Slowe, endured conditions on day one of the 3-day championships that was not experienced by the competitors in many years and this was reflected in the scores that were recorded.
Day 2 of what is expected to be an exciting championship will see the marksmen competing at the 300 and 600 yards ranges on Saturday, while the final day, Sunday, will be competed at the 500, 600 and 1000 yards ranges.
The local Riflemen are getting ready to defend both the Short and Long Range Titles at the West Indies Fullbore championships to be held in the Land of the Flying Fish, Barbados next month end at the Paragon Rifle Ranges.
