‘Shine Rice’ hacked to death at Konawaruk

Police are looking for a man who allegedly hacked a 36-year-old labourer to death at around 02:00 hrs yesterday at a Mousie Landing, Konawaruk shop.
Police sources said that Troy Hanover, known as ‘Shine Rice’, was chopped by the suspect after being accused of stealing a quantity of raw gold.
The shop where the murder occurred was subsequently torched while the proprietress was at the Mahdia Police Station informing ranks about the incident.
Kaieteur News understands that the murder suspect is a relative of a man who Hanover had recently wounded. Police believe that the killing was in retaliation for that attack and the alleged disappearance of some raw gold.
According to reports reaching Kaieteur News, sometime yesterday, a man who was staying at the shop claimed that he had lost some gold.
Another man, whose relative Hanover had wounded reportedly accused the labourer of being the thief.
An argument ensued during which the suspect chopped ‘Shine Rice’ with a cutlass before fleeing the scene.
Hanover was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia Hospital.
Police said that the proprietress of Diaz’s Shop, where the murder occurred, went to the Mahdia Police Station to report the incident.
She eventually returned to discover that her premises had been torched.
Police are working on the theory that associates of the slain man set the shop alight because the suspect was employed there.
Police have taken statements from the shopkeeper and three other people in connection with the fire.
