…10 excavators ordered, works to start shortly
Government is intent on moving ahead with the Hope/Dochfour relief canal which should solve the Mahaica flood situation, once and for all.
As a matter of fact, several excavators have been ordered and works on the 10km long canal along with sluices and roadways, are likely to start soon, says Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud.
A study of the project, which is estimated to cost over $3B, has found no technical problems with the project.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud and CIOG’s CEO, Moen ul Hack, make the $2M donations to farmers at Hope Estate yesterday.
The comments were made yesterday by Minister Persaud at Hope, East Coast Demerara, as several farmers who have been relocated from the flood-prone Mahaica area, were given assistance in the form of fertilizers, spray cans, pesticides and other items.
The $2M in donations came from Libya to the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG).
According to Persaud, there have been criticisms by political parties and others on the project which is expected to lessen the volume of waters that has to be released into the Mahaica River from the Maduni area.
This has been one of the main reasons for flooding in the area since that river is unable to take the excess waters, especially when there is high intensity rainfall.
The Minister had a simple message to the critics– visit the area and investigate the deplorable state there when the rains come.
It is clear that there are movements to stymie growth in the country and this was evident when the Berbice River Bridge was under construction and now more recently the Amaila Falls Hydro Project, the official noted. Government will proceed with Hope/Dochfour project.
The reality is that the continued use of the Mahaica River is threatening the East Coast Demerara area, especially in high rainfall periods, he said.
“Perhaps the critics are hoping to induce a disaster by not having the project become a reality”.
Within days, 10 more excavators are due in the country to be mobilised for the project and monies have already been allocated in the budget.
