On Saturday, the Rotary Club of Stabroek, Georgetown, renewed its commitment to the National Library (Bagotsville Branch) with a simple ceremony to mark the handing over of a cheque to support expansion of the library.
Stabroek’s Director for Service Projects, Sase Gunraj, made the presentation to Senior Librarian, Patricia McKenzie.
The club’s partnership with the Library and the Bagotsville Concerned Citizens Group was launched in 2006.
The partnership aspires to improve the literacy and numeracy of children in communities of Nismes, La Granch and Bagotsville. Over the years the number of users has grown, hence necessitating the expansion of the library and enhancement of services. The Bagotsville Concerned Citizens Group sees the library as an important step toward boosting education in the classroom and giving more kids the opportunity to learn about topical issues.
The partnership will continue to advance literacy of students in the Bagotsville neighbourhood as a key strategy for addressing today’s increasingly complex economic and social issues and at the same time creating a more literate citizenry which is critical for moving Guyana towards a knowledge based economy.
Rotary International promotes literacy as a means to sustainable human development and the Rotary Club of Stabroek remains committed to exposing young people to meaningful and robust education opportunities that will improve their intellectual abilities, contribute to personal development and increase their productivity in society.
