GPL’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Aeshwar Deonarine, testing his glucose level at the power company’s Health Fair.
The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) hosted a mini health fair yesterday at its Kingston office in observance of World Occupational Safety and Health Day, to be observed on April 28.
Employees were given the opportunity to check their blood pressure, glucose level, and take an HIV test.
There was also a condom application demonstration. Pamphlets and brochures about various issues were available for employees. Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Aeshwar Deonarine, stated that health is man’s greatest wealth and that good health facilitates a productive work force.
He further stated that, employees should take the knowledge they have about good health into their homes and communities. Mr. Deonarine volunteered to be the first person to go through all of the tests.
Human Resources Manager, Ronald Herbert, stated that the human resource in any company is the most important element and for it to fully operate, the human resource must be in good health. In keeping with International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) guidelines, World Day for Safety and Health promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
The ILO began observing World Occupation Safety and Health Day in 2003. The programme is an awareness-raising effort intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem as well as creating a safety and health culture to reduce the incidence of work-related deaths and injury.
