Twenty-nine-year-old police Sherwyn Richardson who was struck down by a speeding car at a roadblock remains hospitalised in a critical condition.
Up to press time yesterday, Richardson, who is attached to the Tactical Services Unit, was being monitored closely at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. He had regained consciousness.
Richardson was in the company of his colleagues manning a roadblock when the driver who was reportedly speeding struck him from behind, a police source said.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver, in his defence, is claiming that since the area where the roadblock was being conducted was dark, he never saw the roadblock until it was too late. By then Richardson who was standing on the eastern side of the road was struck down and hurled several yards before the car came to a screeching halt.
The badly injured cop was picked up by his stunned colleagues and rushed to the hospital while the driver of the car was detained. The police administered a breathalyzer test to the driver in the Police Hospital Outpost, where he was being held, and he was found to have had no alcohol in his system.
