Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust did all that they could have done to secure a win against one of the strongest teams in the Mackeson National Super Ward Basketball Championship, but in the end, Albouystown/Charlestown was just too good.
Wortmanville’s forward, Clement Brusche must have a profound sense of disappointment after forcing an unnecessary technical foul that allowed Albouystown back in the game to tie it up at 62 in regular time then win it 80-66 in overtime.
Rodwell ‘Kobe’ Fortune scored 21 points in the win for Albouystown while Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai ended with 20 points and three steals. Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Nicko Fraser had 12 points.
For Wortmanville, Travis Burnett had 12 points and Naylon Loncke 10 points as the five-time Georgetown Inter-Ward finalists slipped to its second consecutive Group ‘B’ defeat, which damped and overshadowed their Final Four hopes.
Wortmanville was within sight of pulling off a stunning victory after two dominant plays from their centres Kurt Elias and Vivian Alder put them up 50-40 at the end of the second to last period before a dramatic
10 minutes of basketball.
Within the first minute of the final quarter of regulation time, Wortmanville continued the offensive run they started in the third when Triston Lake helped them to a 14-point 54-40 lead that Fraser and Fortune went to work on.
Wortmanville’s offence then imploded after guard, Burnett made a few turnovers that the deep Albouystown unit capitalised on at the offensive end of the court.
The run placed an All-Star Albouystown team within eight points of the lead.
Ball possession and use of the clock would have perhaps easily handed Wortmanville the win, but Brusche, with all his experience gathered from years playing at the division one level, had other thoughts that landed him a technical foul. Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph made all four crunch-time free-throws to help his team to a 60-54 points’ deficit that ignited the fans on the western half of the Sports Hall as a 14-point lead was now four points with two minutes left in regulation time.
The game that always had the makings of a classic, lived up to expectation when Fortune completed two free-throws and Roberts made a steal, which he tossed to Fraser for a lay-up that tied the game at 60 before Kanhai gave Albouystown the lead.
However, Elias nailed two free-throws to send the game into overtime as Wortmanville’s early momentum was officially gone. The five minutes of overtime proved that fact with a hapless Wortmanville merely adding four points to its regular time score.
Roberts, Fraser and Kanhai conspired for four consecutive fast-break plays to initiate an 18-point run for the team that devastated Wortmanville. Loncke’s eight three-point attempts in overtime all failed to reach its target. Albouystown had led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 32-31 at halftime. The team will face South Ruimveldt in the feature game Sunday night after Wortmanville challenge East Bank for its first win of the National Super Ward.
East Coast had its first win in Group ‘A’ earlier Thursday night when they defeated New Amsterdam 72-62 with Quacy Newton scoring 20 points and Stephon Gillis and Courtney English adding 13 points each. Shen Scotland scored 17 for New Amsterdam and Randy Caesar finished with 17 points.
The championship continues tonight with a triple header. North will take on New Amsterdam in the first game while Christianburg play Kitty/Campbellville in the second game and Central Mackenzie take on East Bank in the feature game.
