– Players to be identified for selection on provisional squad for Digicel Cup
Guyana’s preparations to contest the next phase of the CFU Women’s Gold Cup qualifying Competition will resume in full flight in Canada from May 1-8 where the entire team is expected to assemble.
According to President of the Guyana Football Federation Colin Klass, who made the disclosure to Kaieteur Sport during an interview on Wednesday, at the Federation’s Headquarters in Section ‘K’ Campbellville, the overseas-based players along with the three based here in Guyana will be engaged in rigorous training sessions and warm-up games while in Canada, before they leave for the tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.
Guyana is in Group F along with T&T, Barbados and St. Lucia and play their first game against Barbados on May 10 and that will be followed by the clash against St. Lucia two days later and the final encounter against T&T to be played on May 14.
The winners of the respective groups along with the best runners-up will qualify for the Central American & Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico.
Klass said that the camp in Canada was planned at that stage to facilitate the players who’re attending colleges and who would be enjoying the break from school during that period.
He disclosed that the three players Collette Hope, goalkeeper Ronette Cort and Ahkella Castello along with Coach Wayne Dover will be part of the encampment pending the outcome of their visa applications.
Klass also informed that 2-3 other players have since been included in the squad and were chosen to participate in the sessions.
Meanwhile, Klass in response to the question of the Men’s preparations for the Digicel Cup and said that even though a squad has not been selected, the mere fact that most of the top players are currently involved in the National League for their respective clubs should give them reasonable preparations for the upcoming tournament.
“The fact that we have the National League running it means that the players are being kept active, but I must say that we are currently in the process of identifying players for possible selection on a provisional squad that will commence preparations for national duties.
The GFF President further disclosed that a few friendly internationals probably against St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Puerto Rico and Guatemala are being discussed with the relevant authorities presently.
