According to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), several power outages over the Easter weekend were as a result of kite-flying activities.
The company stated that this year, more incidents were caused by these occurrences than any other year and this was despite a number of public appeals via the media for persons to desist from flying kites near power wires.
“There were seventeen incidents that resulted in 46 minutes of power outages which affected various sections of the system. However, none of these outages can be attributed to shortage in generating capacity.”
According to GPL, the fact that 10 of the seventeen faults were caused by transient ground faults and network incidents resulting in low system frequency suggests that kite-flying activities played a major role in the disturbances experienced.
During the Easter weekend, between April 2 and 6, four shutdowns were experienced in the Berbice system which caused over one hour in outages and affected consumers between Onverwagt to Bygeval, Ithaca, Republic Road and Strand New Amsterdam, Main Road New Amsterdam to Kortberaad and Number 53 Village to Moleson Creek.
The power company yesterday disclosed that apart from the four shutdowns in Berbice, there were 15 incidents leading to power outages of varying duration that affected consumers in various sections of the network. Three of these were load-shedding due to insufficient capacity that resulted from checks being run on the transmission line to Skeldon. However, as with the Demerara system, no faults were discovered on the lines.
On Monday last, two 50Hz shutdowns in the city were caused by a fault from of the 69KV power transformers at Sophia. However, the problem was identified and this has been fixed.
GPL warned that line maintenance activities in Georgetown and West Demerara will continue, necessitating outages.
The power company urged that consumers be patient as ongoing works are intended to prepare for the expected rainy season.
GPL also encouraged consumers to report any fault as there may be cases where technicians may not be aware of some of the incidents that will be causing outages.
The company warned residents to be careful in the rainy season, especially in areas known to have illegal connections. Stressing that it will continue the campaign to remove illegal connections, GPL said it has already removed hundreds of feet of illegal lines in the Kuru Kururu area.
In Berbice, work is moving apace to complete repairs of three units while in Demerara, Wartsila is overhauling a 5.5MW unit at Kingston and GPL is completing work on an engine at Garden of Eden.
