Dear Editor,
I thank you for the privilege of bringing to the fore, through your letter columns, a matter which should be troubling to fair-minded individuals and businesses with people’s well being at heart.
There can be no doubt that Buxton has had its fair share of troubles leading to the tarnishing of its image and attachment of stigma to its dwellers. Likewise, there can be no doubt that since the execution of Rondel ‘Fineman’ Rawlins and destruction of his notorious gang, that the people of Buxton has been making strides to, and have achieved to a large extent, a turn around to their fortunes.
It is therefore troubling to find out that many businesses which claim to have customers at heart are guilty of discriminating Buxtonians for the simple reason that they live in Buxton. Among the cases which come to mind are
1. A Buxtonian member of a bank enquiring about a facility to assist in the purchase of a piece of land situated in Buxton, only to be told boldly by the customer representative, “we don’t do business in Buxton.”
2. A customer of a store buying a freezer for cash and having to find his own transportation to take it to Buxton, and the store refusing to send a technician to rectify a fault with which the freezer was unknowingly bought, while it was still under warranty, causing the purchaser to find yet more money to return and recollect the freezer.
3. An inquiry about being an agent for a money transfer agency on the East Coast of Demerara being welcomed, but suddenly refused because the businessman proposed to house the agency in Buxton.
Mr. Editor, I am first to admit that people still have concerns about the stability of the village of Buxton, but I also posit that lots of positive things especially in the area of business development are taking place and should be supported by those companies/businesses which benefit from millions of dollars being spent by Buxtonians.
Further I suggest that Buxtonians become vigilant enough to move their business from entities that do not support the efforts at turning the tides of destruction once present in Buxton. After all hands wash hands mek hands clean.
Concerned Buxtonian
