– play Albouystown in ‘big’ Super Ward game
By Edison Jefford
It’s crunch-time for Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust tonight when the five-time Georgetown Inter-Ward Champions come up against the team that has emerged as the strongest in the Mackeson National Super Ward, Albouystown/Charlestown.
Naylon Loncke ‘sucked’ his teeth at the end of their first game, which they lost, against Central Mackenzie, and rightly so. Wortmanville blew a game that they worked hard to get back into after being out-played for three quarters.
But that was against Central Mackenzie. One doubts that Albouystown will even allow a thought of a comeback. The team is just too good. Tonight’s featured game represents an enterprising fixture fit for the final of this competition.
Wortmanville already has one loss, Albouystown has one win and any three or even two wins can guarantee a Final Four place. So what’s the deal? Both teams must win tonight to ensure that their semi-final hopes are kept alive.
Wortmanville need offence. Here’s why: Naylon Loncke cannot be the principle scorer and the only one in double figures as he was in their loss against Central Mackenzie. That is a recipe for a blow-out against Albouystown.
Loncke needs offensive help, but where does he look: to Aubrey Smith, to Royston Siland, to Clement Brusche, to Triston Lake or to Travis Burnette? All of whom failed to make any serious impression on the score sheets in the first game.
After Loncke’s 28 points, Burnette had the next best score with seven points, which is a major disaster if repeated tonight. The point is that Loncke’s supporting cast, listed above, must perform if his team is to have any chance.
Championship teams are expected to make statements. Albouystown did that in their first game when they blew-out East Bank. From the appearance and performance of the team, it became clear that they will be a handful in the tournament.
Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts have put together an All-Star team after shopping Akeem ‘The Dream’ Khanai and Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph from Linden. The team has filled every position with lethal depth and dangerous potency.
Head-to-head or man-to-man, Wortmanville is no match for Albouystown. Wortmanville has to win tonight with strategy. Albouystown will continue oiling their engines ahead of the Final Four round if Wortmanville moves to ‘man’ match-ups.
Apart from Roberts, Joseph and Khanai, Albouystown has in its armoury Trevor McCleod, Alwyn Bellamy, Rodwell ‘Kobe’ Fortune and Nicko Fraser. The team has a lot more depth than Wortmanville for a man-to-man size-up.
The feature game tonight is a ‘big’ game in any stretch of imagination. Both teams, at best, are taxed to ensure that they turn up in a huge way. To besides, it will be a renewal of old foes from the Georgetown Inter-Ward Competition.
New Amsterdam with one loss and East Coast with two losses will play each other in the preceding game. The stakes are huge with $500,000 for first place; $250,000 for second place; $150,000 for third and $75,000 for fourth place.
