Dear Editor,
The curtains came down on the Guyana Football Association 75th Anniversary Celebrations with the visit of the Cuba National under-23 team in December of 1977.
Guyana playing under the captaincy of Thomas United’s Earl O’Neal, who earlier in October had guided Guyana to a series triumph over Barbados, started the Cuba series on a disappointed note losing one nil at Mackenzie sports club.
In the highly competitive contest, Cuba scored in the 69th minute to seal game one in the four test series the goal scorer for Cuba was Francisco Lopes.
The second match played at Burnham Park New Amsterdam, saw both teams playing to a one all draw. Guyana’s goal was scored by Santos’ Walter (Yam) Prince, while Roberto Espinosa equalized for Cuba from the penalty spot.
The third match was contested at Mackenzie Sports Club ground and Guyana looking to avenge the opening lost and even the series had to settle for a hard fought nil all draw a result that sadden the mining town.
The final encounter was played at Football Head Quarters GFC with Cuba leading the series one nil.
But the anticipated celebration party was spoiled by Santos’ Maurice Enmore who scored twice with perfect headers to give Guyana a commanding 2 -1 victory and levelled the four match International series.
