After five competitive rounds of keen rivalry, Guyanese domino players have amassed 17 points and have assumed the lead when the final Test match of the 16th Biennial International Domino tournament concluded at the Spot 7 Sports Club, Freeman Street, East LaPenitence Georgetown.
The teams were intricately poised going into the final round with players from the Caribbean Domino Social Organization of London (CDSO) just 3 points adrift of Guyana’s total while the Caribbean Domino Association of the USA (CDA) are in the cellar with 15 points.
Guyana has fielded a strong nine-member team captained by Mr. Godfrey Samuels with Ms Gwen McGowan as his manager. Mr. Wendell McPherson is the assistant to Ms McGowan.
President of the Guyana National Domino Federation (GNDF), Deputy Mayor Robert Williams said that the tournament was well-organized and was of an exceptionally high quality. He opined the despite the small lead enjoyed by Guyanese players going into the final test, the situation was not so cut and dried as the team with the better technical application could have carted off the honours.
Mr. Williams explained that shrewd tactical applications were responsible for Guyana assuming the lead but they would still have to be wary of the other teams the tournament was intricately poised and fortunes could slant in favour of any of the teams.
Several trophies are up for grabs when activities conclude with the prize giving ceremony today at the Ex- Police Association, Cowan Street Kingston.
