In mostly murky conditions at the Enmore ground on the East Coast of Demerara, Demerara retained their senior 50-overs female Inter-County cricket title by beating Berbice by three wickets yesterday.
After overnight and morning rain delayed the start of play until 14:00hrs and reduced to virtual final to a 20-over per side affair, Berbice slumped to 11-5 on a track with moisture and never really recovered to be dismissed for 60 in 19.4 overs.
Demerara, who like Berbice comprehensively trashed Essequibo in their first round game, eventually reached 61 for 7 in 20 overs as poor fielding and inexperienced let the home team off the hook.
Without their West Indies female pair of Shamaine Campbell and Tremaine Smartt, Berbcie proved a damp squib and former Guyana female team Skipper and Player-of-the Match Zaheeda Samdally soon had them on the ropes on her way to figures of 3-4 from three overs of medium pace.
Melanie Henry who top-scored with 18 was the only batter to reach double figures for Berbice as five if their batters fell for ducks.
The in-form June Ogle-Thomas, who scored an unbeaten century in the opening match, again looked the best of the batters in the three-team competition but once she fell for a top score of 18 and Wicketkeeper Victoria Bacchus departed for 10, the Demerara innings stuttered before they eventually won with four overs to spare.
Skipper Devanie Sewnarine (9) was the next best batter after Ogle-Thomas and Bacchus while Samdally (5*) and Akeze Thompson (6*) took their team from 52-7 to victory as Berbice wilted under pressure with a series of mis-fields and a crucial drooped catch with Thompson on 3 and Demerara on 56-7.
The Presentation was attended by Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Chetram Singh, Vice-President Bissoon Singh, Secretary Anand Sanasie, Competitions Committee member Colin Europe and Man-of-the-Match adjudicator Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis.
Devanie Sewnarine was presented with the winner’s cheque of $100,000. Berbice Captain Natasha Gangoo collected the $50,000 Runner up prize.
The $500,000 sponsorship from Hotel Tower is the biggest sponsorship ever for a local female cricket competition and Hotel Tower’s Front Desk Manager Mr Hemraj, congratulated Demerara and committed sponsorship for next year’s competition.
The GCB President said while everyone hoped the game would have been longer the weather prevented a full a match. He however feels that the better team won and urged the girls to work hard on their cricket since a 24-person trial squad will be announced shortly to prepare for this year’s Regional Women’s tournament set for sometime in July/August.
Singh Thanked Hotel Tower for their support of women’s cricket and informed that one or two practice matches have been planned before the Guyana team is selected.
Bissoon Singh, also the President of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB), congratulated the Demerara team for their success and said special mention must be made of the support of BK International who sponsored the practice matches used to help select the Demerara team.
