Thanks to the Director of Child Protection Services, Ms. Ann Greene, the investigations into the 39-year-old man molesting a four-year-old has been given a push.
Yesterday, after seeing the article in this newspaper, Ms. Greene said that some of her staff went in search of the child and her parents. Ms. Greene said that they have offered counseling for the child and her parents who were very receptive to the offer. “The fact is that she is very brave and outspoken. She will respond well to what we have to offer as opposed to a child who is withdrawn,” Ms. Greene said.
Ms Greene added that the story which was related to her was very horrifying. The police continue to maintain that there was no penetration.
“The examination showed that there was no penetration but the fact remains that the child was molested which is a traumatic experience for a child her age,” she pointed out.
The parents of the child, Ms. Greene said, also told them of the way the matter is being dealt with by the police, and through her good office, the parents were able to meet with a senior member of the Guyana Police Force.
During that meeting, the parents were given all assurance that the file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions sometime later today for advice.
In response to the way the matter was dealt with by the police, Ms. Greene said the current system in place leaves much to be desired. She however noted that with the passing of the Sexual Offences Bill, all the loopholes will be filled, with the aim of more protection for children from sexual predators.
In addition, Ms. Greene said the Child Protection Services will continue to provide counseling for the child, as it is necessary.
On Sunday last, a 39-year-old man of Station Street, Kitty, was caught half naked with his four- year-old neighbour.
The matter was reported to the police and the man reportedly admitted to molesting the child but stated that the child asked him to do it. Despite receiving information that the child and the man are neighbours, the police released the man on station bail, mere hours after the report was made. Following that, the child was reportedly made to endure taunts from the man and his relatives.
