Seventeen-year-old Geoffrey Gittens was granted $75,000 bail on Wednesday, when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Gittens is alleged to have stolen one gold chain valued $300,000 from Penny Prichard.
The virtual complainant who was present in court stated that she was seated in the back seat of a friend’s vehicle. The woman said that the car window was halfway down. Prichard related that she had observed Gittens standing close to the window, but really did not take him seriously. She said that within seconds, Gittens grabbed her chain and made a dash to reach a nearby crowd.
The woman said she began screaming frantically for help, and several eyewitnesses gave chase. Gittens was apprehended and taken to a police station.
However, Gittens told the court that he is a vendor at the Staborek Market and he knows nothing about the robbery. The teen said that he was only picked out by the police because he was wearing a “red jersey”.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford, opposed bail and asked for an early date so that statements could be served.
Magistrate Robertson placed Gittens on $75,000 bail and ordered him to return to court next Monday, April 19.
