National Women’s Hockey team selected for CAC Games
– Overseas-based Munroe being considered
The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) recently reduced the original training squad of 30 players down to 19 for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games scheduled for Mayaguez Puerto Rico from July 22 – 31, 2010.
This was disclosed by President of the GHB Phillip Fernandes, who also informed that the ladies will continue preparations at the GCC ground, Bourda and the National Gymnasium four days per week under his guidance and Assistant Coach Rawl Davson.

Fernandes said that while the deadline for submission of entries to participate in the CAC Games ends on June 17, all nations were asked to submit their intention to do so earlier this year.
So far the Pan American Hockey Federation has confirmed a full compliment of eight nations in the women’s competition with Guyana seeded at the bottom in eighth place.
The other seven nations signalling an interest are Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Barbados, Jamaica, Bermuda, Dominican Republic and hosts Puerto Rico.
This will be Guyana’s first appearance in women’s hockey at the CAC Games and their ranking has suffered as result of their lack of participation in regional competitions over the past several years.
With their recent return to international hockey, the relatively young hockey side now have the experience of having competed in Venezuela in 2005 and Trinidad in 2007.
“Our ladies are still very inexperienced at this level when compared with some of the other teams who usually compete in multiple tournaments each year, while we can only afford to do so twice in a four-year cycle,” Fernandes explained.
Fernandes went on to mention that some of the senior ladies on the opposing teams competed in the same Pan American Games as he had way back in 1991.
The team is scheduled to travel to Trinidad for a weekend training stint in May and then again to Barbados for a similar exercise in June.
The GHB according to Fernandes view these expensive trips as necessary in order to expose the players to the conditions of hockey on an artificial pitch which is quite different from the grass fields to which they are accustomed.
He added that the overseas stints will involve morning training and afternoon matches against top clubs and national selections of the respective host countries.
According to the GHB, one more overseas-based player, Janella Munroe, is still being considered and will undergo an evaluation at the first available opportunity.
Three goalkeepers have also been retained in the team so far which only requires two.
As a result of these two factors, the selection of the final 18 players to make an appearance in Puerto Rico will be made sometime in the coming month.
Meanwhile those included in the team are: Alysa Xavier, Natalie Hing, Jonelle Webster, Trisha Woodroffe, Tiffany Solomon, Vanessa Pires, Vashema Bourne, Tricia Fiedtkou, Marzena Fiedtkou, Marisha Rodrigues, Sonia Jardine, Chantelle Fernandes, Cora Towler, Amanda Garnett, Ulrica Sutherland, Gabriella Xavier, Dominique DeGroot, Kerensa Fernandes and Avonda James.
