In a desperate attempt to address the litany of extant public health issues, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) has decided to intensify its efforts through a multimedia approach.
Public Relations Officer, Royston King in a statement said that the municipality has been attracted by a barrage of undesirable activities that constitute a threat to public health in the city. Many of these issues, he said, arise out of ignorance on the part of some citizens as it relates to certain requirements as stipulated by law and their roles and responsibilities as good citizens.
As a result, he said that the council sees the need for an aggressive public education programme. In fact, as part of the drive, King related that the council proposes to begin a series of radio/television call-in programmes to educate and engage citizens on various health issues.
It is expected that the National Communications Network (NCN) will be the primary host of the series. Topics scheduled for intense discussion will initially include food storage and handling, environmental sanitation, water purification and conservation, inspection of food processing plants and allied facilities. The various segments of the series will be facilitated by technical, health and professional staff from the M&CC as well as health personnel from the Ministry of Health.
It was only recently that the municipality attempted to address the sale of food in the city by introducing a series of awareness workshops which was kicked off at the Stabroek Market last month. The workshop, which was facilitated by officials of the Public Health and Environmental Departments of the municipality, saw the attendance of some 50 vendors who operate food shops and snackettes in the market.
The issue of proper hygiene in the preparation and processing of foods were among the hot topics addressed, in addition to the fact that vendors should be properly attired when preparing food. The proper sale of cheese, sausages, chicken and types of raw food were discussed at the meeting with vendors.
And plans are already in the pipeline to hold a similar workshop with butchers who operate in the market, King had disclosed.
The municipality is currently on a vigilant campaign to ensure that the bylaws of the municipality are enforced when it comes to the preparation of food and fruits, and soon treatment of water will come under scrutiny, King has asserted.
