Former striker of the Santos FC, Mickey Layne turned back the hands of time, scoring the decisive goal against a team of past footballers from Thomas United FC when the two teams clashed in a specially arranged match in honour of Godfrey Poulis, a former national footballer, at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground Friday evening last.
The tournament which was organized by Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell also witnessed veterans from Western Tigers FC battling furiously to eventually overcome their counterparts from overseas 5-4 to cap off an exciting evening of football. Ivor Dowridge netted a double for the winning team with support from Terrence Lewis, George Rowley and Ola Pedro who all found the back of the net once.
Those scoring for the Overseas Veterans were Jermaine Scott, who netted a double, with support from Trevor Maxwell.
Barnwell was kept very busy as two days later he returned to organize a day of sports in Vryheid’s Lust ECD for residents of that area and its environs. Residents competed for honours in football, domino and basketball.
In a football match, Vryheid’s Lust ‘A’ Team defeated a ‘B’ team from that same area 4-3 to cart off the honours.
Troy Collymore who represented the winning team was also adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The basketballers took over soon afterwards and once again the Vryheid Lust team prevailed, defeating Young Warriors 21-18. Ryan Gullen scored 13 points for the winners and was eventually adjudged Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Back Alley domino team was the top side defeating Machine Domino team 77 games to 72. Andrew Gillis chalked up the most games to win the prize in that category.
