A successful application was yesterday made on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack, to have the Bartica Massacre preliminary inquiry held at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Presently there are five men who are accused of the vicious attack which left 12 persons dead.
The men, Roger Simon called “Goat man”, Celbert Reece called “Chi Chi” Mark Williams also known as Royden Williams, Michael Caesar called “Capone” and Dennis Williams called “Anaconda” are all accused of killing Irving Ferreira, Edwin Gilkes, Dexter Adrian, Zaheer Zakir, Shane Fredericks, Ron Osborne ,Deonarine Singh Ronald Gomes , Ashraf Khan, Abdool Yasin, Errol and Baldeo Singh.
Yesterday, as the matter was called before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, the prosecutor said that the DPP had requested that the matters be tried in Georgetown.
Kaieteur News understands that a number of reasons were cited, which included communication, the number of times the Bartica Magistrate’s court sits per month and also security measures.
On a number of occasions the defendants had asked for the matters to be transferred because they were not taken to court.
The matters were transferred to court three and the five men are expected to make another court appearance next Tuesday.
Mark Williams and Dennis Williams had made a daring attempt to escape from the Camp Street Prison almost two years ago. The other escapees, identified as Dennis Williams, called ‘Anaconda’, Mark Royden Williams, also known as Royden Durant and ‘Smallie’; Shawn Williams, Paul Bagot and Wayne Archibald, Sherwin Moses, Sherwin Nero, were all recaptured by the joint services.
Dennis Williams was also charged for armed robbery in connection with the GuySuCo payroll heist. The inmates broke out of the Remand Dormitory by prising out a bar from a cell window.
The inmates managed to climb through the window, down a water tank trestle and made their way into the compound. However, an alert prison warder reportedly spotted the prisoners trying to scale the prison fence and raised an alarm.
