Alpha face T&T’s San Juan Jabloteh this evening

Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will commence their quest to advance further in the second-round of the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup when they take on hosts San Juan Jabloteh this evening at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago in a Group D fixture.

This match holds much significance for the leading Guyanese Club since it marks their first appearance in the second-round having been knocked out by Haiti’s Tempete FC in the home and away first-round tie last year.

Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover and his troops arrived in the Twin Island Republic yesterday a confident bunch under the Captaincy of Howard Lowe, no stranger to the T&T atmosphere, having played many years there at the Semi Professional level and would have had many a battles against the San Juan Jabloteh.

Lowe had expressed confidence that Alpha will do well this time around and so far they have delivered having won their group at home by defeating fellow Guyanese side the Guyana Defence Force and drawing with Suriname Walking Boys.

With the welcome return of leading marksman Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams in tandem with Jamaican’s Oneke Ford, Romel Gomes and Troylan Williams; Dwight Peters, Elton Brown, Shawn Bishop, Philbert Moffatt, Edison Gomes, Dwain Jacobs, Shawn Bishop, Kelvin McKenzie, Quincy Madramootoo, Brion Baker and goal keepers Ronson Williams and Leighton Murray, the ‘Hammer’ will hope that they can hit the opposition hard as they seek an opening win.

San Juan Jabloteh has been one of the most consistent T&T sides over the years and is a very professional unit with a number of Brazilians and Caribbean Nationals in their lineup. The other team in the group is Puerto Rico’s River Plate founded in 2007 were runners up in the 2007-2008 Puerto Rican Championship and winners in 2008-2009.

Meanwhile, the matches in Groups A and B have been postponed due to delays by Haitian clubs Tempete FC and Racing Gonaives in obtaining U.S. visas to travel to Puerto Rico.

Matches involving the teams were to have begun yesterday, but have been deferred until the clubs could get the proper travel documents. An updated schedule is to be announced when the clubs had secured their visas.

Group C which is also being played in the Twin Island Republic features Joe Public, Suriname’s Walking Boys and System 3 of St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

The winners of the four, three-team groups are to advance to a final four-team league phase, from which three teams will advance to next season’s CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round.
