As part of World Health Day activities, the Ministry of Health and the Private Sector, displayed a collection of booths pertaining to the environment and to health issues on Sunday.
At the event the booths featured information packages on National Tuberculosis Programme, Maternal Health, Diabetic Foot care, Guyana Red Cross, Guyana National Road Safety Council, Guyana Rainforest Herbs, Guyana Association for Alternative Medicine, Drug and Reproduction Production Programme, Diabetic Association, National Agricultural Research, Institute, GRPA, Help and Shelter, and Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre.
According to Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, the fair was a culmination of activities on World Health Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) wanted a thousand cities with a thousand lives. In Guyana this health fair will be an annual event.
The Minister said that environmental health is priority in Guyana. Guyanese are simply reckless when it comes to the environment, he added.
The way garbage is handled in the country is an embarrassment to its citizens. It relates to irresponsible behaviour in general which exposes persons to many dangers especially health related.
He said that having a clean city is part of promoting Guyana. Since the event of World Health Day it was decided to highlight the environmental aspects, and join with the Private Sector, Various Government Ministries and the United Nations family to transform Brickdam into a model street so all other streets, villages, towns and regions emulate.
“We are launching an initiative so by September the transformation of Brickdam would have occurred. We want each occupant to take the space in front their compound and keep it clean and as an environmental model for everyone.”
He explained that that would make everyone take responsibility to clean their drains, cut the grass, develop concrete structure if needed, and install sanitation bin infront of their premises.
The Minister revealed that special bins have been made which is anchored to the ground, to be place at key points in specified compounds, which will be care by the proprietor.
“We are launching a special campaign to deal with plastics and to talk to people how to deal with such refuse.”
