Republican lightweight boxer, Nankumar Singh, who thrilled residents of Timerhi in an action packed encounter against Romario Clarke (GDF) on Easter Monday last, was once again in the winners’ row when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) launched the yearly Andrew Murray Novices Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue Saturday evening last.
Singh was required to fight twice for the night and was successful in both bouts. In the first against newcomer Jim O’Selmo from the Port Kaituma Boxing Gym (PKBG), he virtually breezed along to take the decision from an obviously inferior boxer. O’Selmo spent most of the fight backing away from an aggressive Singh and at the end of the three rounds encounter, predictably lost the verdict.
One fight later, Delroy Amsterdam, another lightweight contender from the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) employed a two fisted attack that earned him a knockout verdict over Silton David (GDF). The time was 1:05secs of the second stanza. The win set up an encounter with Singh later on the card.
When the two fighters finally squared off in the final bout of the evening, Singh applied himself to the task with a superb display of variation where he peppered Amsterdam to the body and head. After getting a feel of Singh’s power Amsterdam wisely kept his distance for the rest of the round.
The strong, compact Singh bided his time and eventually caught up with his man in the blue corner and slammed a vicious right to his body that forced the referee to institute the mandatory eight count. Amsterdam returned to the fray but received a wicked right uppercut that flung him to the canvass in a crumpled heap. The referee started the count but after noting the glazed look in Amsterdam’s eyes, promptly waved the contest off. The time of the execution was 2:22 seconds of the second stanza.
Earlier in the night, Benjamin Henry turned in a masterful performance to eke out a 2-1 decision over Carlton Lá Fleur (FYF). Representing the Port Kaituma Boxing Gym, Henry belied his novice status with a determined display that sent the fans into a frenzy. Possessing more determination than skills, Henry belted his taller foe on several occasions and had him backing up.
The short fighter from the Barima/Waini region fought his heart out for a decision that earned him a spot in last night’s finals.
The light/heavyweight encounter between Troyston Thomas (GDF) and Roberto Lancaster (FYF) was a humdinger. Lancaster apparently believed that power comes from a distance. He unleashed a barrage of long ranged punches to Thomas’ head but the telegraphed shots were way off their mark. Some connected but most missed. Thomas eventually found his rhythm and dealt him several wallops. The effort proved costly for Thomas who seemed to have utilized his quota of oxygen.
With no life support to see him through the end, he surrendered meekly in 1:05secs of the second stanza. Trelon Munroe registered another victory for the Republican Boxing Gym when he stopped Gordon Nedd (GDF) in 2:55secs of round one. Munroe stamped his authority from the onset with several vicious uppercuts that had Nedd backpedaling to avoid the blows. Munroe caught up with him nearing the end of the round and unleashed a barrage of punches that left Nedd slinging on the ropes. As the round wound down Munroe lashed out and connected to the soldier’s jaw and down he went. He rose before the mandatory eight count but could not muster the courage to re-enter the fray.
Bantamweight, Keeve Allicock also distinguished himself from the other boxers with two classical displays that belied his novice status. In his first bout, the slimly built Allicock disposed of Dellon Ryan (GDF) in 33secs of round two. He then returned later in the night to overcome Mark Marshall (GDF) by a 3-0 majority.
Other results of Saturday night’s card are: Lightweight Quincy Jones (GDF) stopped Republican David Thomas in 1:37secs of the second round, middleweight Blair Haynes (GDF) earned a 2-1 verdict over David Duncan (FYF), Lightweight Quincy Jones (GDF) prevailed after the referee stopped his lightweight bout against David Thomas (Rep) in 1:37secs of round two. Middleweight Blair Haynes (GDF) then won a 2-1 decision from David Duncan (FYF). In the heavyweight bout, Samuel Primo (GDF) shut out Brian Bailey’s (Rep) lights in 1:48 of the second round to cart off the honours. The finals took place last night at the same venue.
