The senior players of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) including West Indies ‘A’ team Skipper Travis Dowlin, opted not to represent their team in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Digicel 20/20 first division cricket match on Saturday but to participate in a feature 15/15 cricket match at the Canal Number Two ground in West Demerara for prize money worth just over half of a million dollars.
While the second-string DCC side left to battle in Queenstown were dismissed for an embarrassing 39 in a crushing loss to GCC, the other much stronger DCC side were also once again trashed by New Line Cavaliers on the West Side.
NL Cavaliers dismissed DCC for 108 in 14.1 overs and then, led by a Man-of-the-Match 15-ball 48 from Andre Lyght Junior, which was decorated with 5 fours and four sixes, reached 110-2 off just 11 overs to win by eight wickets.
NL Cavaliers, the top team in Demerara’s three-day first division cricket in their debut season, is one of the favorites to win the soon the be played National 20/20 tournament and quickly had DCC wobbling on the ropes in their feature match.
Asked to bat on a slow track, the city were in early trouble when Test batsman Dowlin was bowled off the last ball of the first over by pacer Paul Wintz for 1 to send the Cavaliers supporters wild.
Denis Squires 28 from 13 balls, Kevin George 27 from 15 and West Indies under-19 opening batsman Trevon Griffith 25 from 17 were the only batsmen to reach double figures for DCC.
Former Guyana youth team leg-spinner Balram Samaroo (3-1-9-2), Chein Gittens (3-0-26-2) ex-West Indies under-19 Captain Andre Percival (3-0-37-2) and former West Indies under-19 player Gajanand Singh (3-0-20-2) did the damage for the West Demerara side who are still without their leading bowler Mahendra Nagamootoo who is playing professionally in Trinidad.
The right-handed Lyght, son of former Guyana and West Indies ‘A’ team opener Andrew Lyght, tore into the new ball attack after former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen (11) and Chabiraj Ramcharran (22) were dismissed by off-spinner Kevin George who finished with 2-11 from his three overs.
Gajanand Singh, a present First-Class player struck 2 fours and a six in his unbeaten 17 from 10 balls as West Demerara galloped to victory.
Lyght received G$30,000 for the Man-of-the-Match and another G$10,000 for the batsman with the most runs while Samaroo got G$10,000 after being adjudged the best bowler. The winning team took home $300,000 while DCC got $150,000 for their 2-hour work despite the loss.
A senior GCA official informed that while it would hope that the best available players participate in their competitions, the governing body for cricket in the city has no authority or desire to decide the composition of club teams for GCA matches.
Another GCA official said clubs had the right to pick whatever team they wanted for matches without directives or interference from the GCA but hinted that selectors would be looking at commitment and other factors when picking players who aspire to play for Georgetown, Demerara, Guyana and the West Indies.
