Guyanese Narsingh Deonarine continued to impress at the International 20/20 level even as fellow countrymen Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul again failed to fire as the West Indies beat Ireland by 31 runs yesterday at Trelawny Stadium in Jamaica.
Deonarine who scored 40 and took 4-14 in Saturday’s 20/20 win against Canada, scored 40 from 33 balls with 3 sixes and a four yesterday as the home team made 143-8 in 20 overs.
Skipper Darren Sammy hit an unbeaten 15-ball 28 and got support from Wavel Hinds who was run out for 21 from 26 balls and Daren Bravo who scored 19 from 25 balls.
Chanderpaul and Sarwan, like Hinds are not known for their devastating hitting in the game’s shortest format and could only manage scorers of 1 and 5 respectively.
Chanderpaul, asked to open, was bowled by Kevin O’Brian while his opening partner Andre Fletcher was removed by Trent Johnson (2-19) for 6 to leave the West Indies on 7-2 in the 3rd over.
Skipper William Porterfield was caught behind by Fletcher for a duck before Ireland had scored and although Paul Sterling made 25 from 35 balls at the top of the order and Johnson (28*) and John Mooney (13*) shared an unfinished 31-run eighth-wicket stand, Ireland, preparing for their 2nd World Cricket tournament in the West Indies, never really challenged the West Indies total.
Ravi Rampaul took 2-19 from 4 overs, his new ball partner left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn had 2-12 from 4 and Sammy 2-15 from 3 for the hosts who will begin their World 20/20 campaign on April 30 at Providence in Guyana against Ireland in the first ever day/night International match to be played in Guyana. Deonarine was later named man-of-the-match.
