When the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Super League sponsored by FIFA under the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF Project continued on Friday evening, defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United stalled the progress of Buxton United, whipping the East Coast side 8-1 at the Enmore Community Centre ground.
Up at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Bakewell Topp XX suffered at the hands of their West Berbice rivals Rosignol United 0-1 and in the feature game of the double header, Milerock ensured that it was not too sad a night for the home teams when they needled Sunburst Camptown also by a 1-0 margin.
Alpha, who will be competing in the second round of the Caribbean Football Union’s Champions League Qualifying Competition later this week in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, gained valuable practice ahead of what is expected to be tough encounters against T&T’s San Juan Jabloteh and Puerto Rico’s River Plate.
Andrew Murray, who has not been a regular in the starting XI, recently responded aptly to his inclusion by the coaching staff with a hat-trick in quick time. Within a 5 minute burst, Murray upstaged the Buxtonians who were on a roll prior to this game as they enjoyed the pole position with 8 points to Alpha’s 6.
Murray blasted the nets in the 10th, 12th and 15th minute to knock the wind out of the sails of Buxton who responded with the only goal in the 17th minute, compliments of Jamal Randy Phyll.
Buxton were able to keep the rampaging ‘Hammer’ at bay for quite some time before Jamaican Treyon Williams ended the short drought with a goal 2 minutes to the break.
The goal carnage continued in the second half despite Buxton’s best efforts to keep the ‘Hammer’ from striking. Three minutes into the half Jamaican forward Oneke Ford added his name to the score sheet with fellow forward Elton Brown also joining the party in the 51st minute.
Captain and main defender Howard Lowe could not resist the temptation of cashing in also and he did so in fine style, hitting the network twice. First he converted in the 65th minute and sealed the deal Alpha’s way in the 84th minute for a solid win which propelled them into the lead on 9 points, their third win in as many matches, Buxton suffering their first loss in 5 games.
Milerock as a result of their triumph over Sunburst Camptown also moved to 9 points at the top of the table from 5 matches having lost twice.
They blanked the challenged of Camptown in the feature game at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground on Saturday evening.
Bakewell Topp XX, once a formidable force in the Bauxite Mining Town went down to the determined Rosignol team compliments of an 81st minute effort by Olvis Mitchell in what was a tough game. Rosignol, who were at the bottom of the points table going into the game (2 losses & 1 draw), never allowed their mental focus to shift from the task of upstaging the home team.
Their determination eventually brought them a goal which has taken them one point above Topp XX who remains on 3 points as they suffered their third loss in 4 matches. Camptown also remains on 3 from a similar amount of games with 2 defeats.
Yesterday at the Enmore Ground, home team Victoria Kings softened Bartica’s Liquid Gold 5-1 to record their first win in 4 matches. It was Liquid Gold’s 2nd defeat in four encounters to date. Meanwhile, the other game that was scheduled for last evening brought together the Guyana Defence Force and Sewall United. More details in tomorrow’s edition.
