Dear Editor,
I have seen the media reports on whom or who should not be the presidential candidate in 2011 for the different parties. I think only the AFC has a settled choice – Raphael Trotman and I am predicting that Peter Ramsaroop will replace Khemraj Ramjattan as its prime ministerial candidate.
But the PPP and PNC may have an intense battle to agree on its choice as there are many contenders. These contenders must be able to tell the public about their track record and performance. One of the contenders in the PPP who have been dodging such exposure has been Frank Anthony, the Minister of Culture. In making up my mind, I wish to pose a few questions to Frank Anthony.
1. Can you tell us about your performance as head of the Health Sector Development Unit and the near collapse of that programme under your watch before you was removed and made a Minister?
2. Is it true you earned a super salary in that position?
3. What would you state as your achievements as Minister of Culture?
4. Why have you not apologised for your mismanagement of CARIFESTA which the President had to intervene and rescue from failure?
5. What about the millions of dollars in cost overrun, delays and other discrepancies with the Olympic size swimming pool at Liliendaal?
6. Can you tell us about the procurement practices for sports and other related gears in your Ministry?
7. Did you see as unethical and a conflict of interest that you was a contender in the PPP Congress elections and at the same time the person who managed the elections?
8. Can you tell us about the organised efforts to bring down the votes of Ralph Ramkarran and others at the PPP Congress?
9. Why have you undone the many positive programmes and initiatives by the past Minister Gail Teixiera?
These questions certainly highlight important issues Dr Anthony must come clean with if he wants to be seriously considered as a candidate. Rather it seems as if the only think going for Dr Anthony is his reliance on the political capital of Navin and Indra Chandarpal.
Insiders say that the Chanderpals have been his promoters.
I look forward to these questions being answered if we are to know this contender for the PPP presidential candidate position in 2011.
