-Triple-header headlines Super Ward
By Edison Jefford
The depth of senior basketball in Linden will be tested tonight when both teams invited to the Mackeson National Super Ward Championship go on show in separate games at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in intense battles for supremacy.
The two leading basketball wards in Linden: Christianburg and Central Mackenzie are to play their first games of the inaugural mega tournament against New Amsterdam and the usually strong, Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust teams respectively.
But before Linden’s finest go on show, Kitty/Campbellville and East Coast will clash for honours in game one of the triple-header. The GT&T and Ansa McAl sponsored event is scheduled to run for 14 nights at the Sports Hall.
Junior basketball in Linden has been extremely active and with the seniors taking a back seat, fans will be eager to see what they will offer against two communities that cannot be taken for granted based on their respective basketball history.
Christianburg is a community located on the western half of the Demerara River where a host of strong senior players compete for either Wismar Pistons or Victory Valley Royals, which are two of the best teams in Linden.
Christianburg will draw its players to compete in the tournament largely from those two teams and as a result, names such as guard Nevin Grenville, Quincy Jones, Trevor Profitt and Anson Durant comes to the forefront.
These players will face unusual opposition from Flint Hinds, former national point guard Carlos Crandon and other players from the Ancient County. The opposition is unusual as most of those players from Linden have not played against New Amsterdam recently, so it will be difficult for them to assess their opposition before.
The competition continues in game three with last year’s Georgetown Inter-Ward finalist, Wortmanville coming up against Linden Inter-Block winners, Central Mackenzie in what should be one of the best games of the tournament.
Central Mackenzie’s national players, centre Jason Alonzo, forward Marvin Hartman and guard Steve Neils Jr. comes centre court with perhaps one of the only teams from Linden that can challenge for the first place $500,000 prize.
The three national players from Central Mackenzie face known nemesis-the Naylon Loncke-led Wortmanville team. This is a ‘big’ team with Clement Brusche and Royston Siland completing a list of quality players on their roster.
Cast a dice, make a prediction but do not forget that all ten teams in this competition are equally strong. East Coast will debut Richard Mohandatt along with Stephon Gillis, Ryan Gullen and Hugh Arthur in a decent combination.
Sheldon Braithwaite and Kester Gomes will spearhead the Kitty side. The bottom line is that the heat is definitely on with a string of quality players lacing their sneakers to decide the best basketball-playing playing community in Guyana.
The second place team will pocket $250,000 while third and fourth places will take home $150,000 and $75,000 respectively. Kaieteur Sport was informed that 4.7 million was the budgeted amount to run the mega basketball competition.
Apart from Ansa McAl and GT&T, Gizmos and Gadgets, Giftland OfficeMax, Toney’s Auto Spares, Stain Masters and Cops Security are among the other major sponsors of the competition, which continues Tuesday night.
