– Most lucrative basketball event opens tonight
By Edison Jefford
Guyana’s most lucrative basketball championships will open tonight-that is one day after telecommunications giant, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) handed over a “handsome” sponsorship cheque toward the event.
The Mackeson National Super Ward that brings together the ten best basketball-playing communities in Guyana will give the winner $500,000, which is the biggest prize money given to a winner of a local tournament in the sport’s history.
The second place team will pocket $250,000 while third and fourth places will take home $150,000 and $75,000 respectively. Kaieteur Sport was informed that 4.7 million was the budgeted amount to run the mega basketball competition.
Senior Marketing Officer of GT&T, Rhonda Johnson, when asked how much they were pumping into the tournament, said that she will not quantify the cheque but rather called the contribution “handsome” at a press briefing yesterday.
“GT&T is please to be associated once again with another event that augurs well for the young people of Guyana. This is not the first time that we have sponsored basketball. If you can recall, last year when we launched the IM2GO Service, that championship was named after the service,” Johnson informed.
The Senior Marketing Officer said that the company has a “very proud history” of being on the giving end of sport activities. She said contributing to the tournament was another way of demonstrating their unending support for sport.
“Our involvement in sport is a long and glorious track record. I would like to congratulate the organisers of this tournament and I wish them success in their endeavours,” Johnson said, adding that the Georgetown/Linden rivalry often brings out the best. President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Trevor Rose told the media that the event certainly has the makings of the largest in history with support of spectators and that of GT&T, a renowned local company.
“I would like to thank GT&T for jumping on board this tournament. We are looking forward for GT&T along with the public to make it a successful tournament,” Rose stated adding that GT&T has set an example for corporate Guyana.
“It is good to see the corporate entity showing this much interest, it is significant and it is good that we can have GT&T on board as one of our major sponsors of the tournament,” he continued at one of the company’s Brickdam offices.
While no games involving Linden teams are scheduled for tonight, two of the favourite teams to win the inaugural event, Albouystown/Charlestown and North Ruimveldt will be looking to send an early message in the two games.
Albouystown will open the proceedings against East Bank while North competes against East Coast in the feature game. The allowance of three guest players per team makes all the teams in the competition a force to reckon with.
Albouystown have reportedly acquired the number one senior point guard in Linden, Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph, who will team up with Trevor McCleod, Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts and Alwyn Bellamy among others.
North on the other hand, comes into the competition with Darcel Harris, who recently returned from the semi-professional League in Trinidad and Tobago, leading an All-Star cast that includes a host of national senior players.
The Most Valuable Player will receive Lebron James’ latest sneakers valued at $25,000 and a cash incentive of $10,000. Trophies and cash prizes will also be given to the Most Defensive Player and the players with the most assists and rebounds.
Apart from Ansa McAl and GT&T, Gizmos and Gadgets, Giftland OfficeMax, Toney’s Auto Spares, Stain Masters and Cops Security are among the other major sponsors of the competition, which continues tomorrow night.
