At Malteenoes, Dillon Heyliger struck an unbeaten half-century to spearhead the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to a comprehensive win over Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) in the opening round of the Digicel 20/20 cricket tournament for first division teams in the city.
Danny Narayan (24) and Shaquille Williams (20) offered some fight as MSC, which included Stanford Superstar and USA All-rounder Lennox Cush, crumbled for 110 all out in 19.5 overs as Travis Gilbert took 3-23 from 4 overs and Carl Campbell 2-15 from 3.
The solders responded with 112-3 in 16.5 overs when Jeremiah Harris ended the game with a reverse swept boundary. GDF lost national under-19 player Royston Alkins for a duck in the first over before Heyliger and Marcus Watkins repaired the damage. He struck Damion Vantull onto the roof of the pavilion for a massive six and then deposited Orin Forde into the Transport ground.
Cush was not spared from Heyliger’s wrath as he too went for a six before Vantull received a second dose; this time over long-off that brought up Heyliger’s half-century. The Essequibo player struck five sixes and two fours in his knock of 65.
Cush removed Marcus Watkins (16) and Shaquille Williams had Montel Gilead (3) stumped to leave the score on 83-3.
At GDF, Everest defeated GNIC by 2 runs after making 129-8 in reply to GNIC’s 127-9 off 20 overs.
Chris Patandin struck a six and two fours in 39 for Everest and got support from Dayanand Roopnarine (29) and David Harper (20), Ranole Bourne took 3-29 and former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts 2-22 for GNIC.
Harper took 2-18 while Charles Ramson Jnr had 3-15 with his left-arm spin in a losing cause for Everest.
