The official start of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) season will commence tomorrow with the staging of the Banks DIH Sevens Championships, at the National Park rugby ground.
According to a release from the Union, the Opening Ceremony and March Past of teams will begin at 10:30 hrs, while Director of Sport Mr. Neil Kumar will deliver the feature address.
The opening of the season follows a year of resounding success of the National Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams who won the Caribbean Championships held in Mexico last November.
That performance was followed by the Men’s attendance at the IRB World Sevens Series in Las Vegas where they performed creditably against some of the best teams in the world including a drawn encounter with #4 ranked France.
The Men’s Sevens team has already begun intense preparation to contest the Central America & Caribbean Games Rugby Sevens to be played at the National Stadium on July 24-25, while both the Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams will defend their Caribbean Championships titles in Guyana immediately following the CAC Games, 27th -31st July.
The Banks DIH Championship trophy will be contested by Men’s teams from Yamaha Caribs, Pepsi Hornets and the Guyana Defence Force, while the President’s Cup will be contested by Women’s teams from Yamaha Caribs and Pepsi Hornets.
The tournament will be followed by the GRFU Sevens League with the Men contesting the President’s Championship Trophy and the Women the Vice President’s Championship Trophy.
